Is there a difference between holotropic breathwork and Grof® Breathwork?
The answer to this common question comes from Stan:
In the GROF® Legacy Training we use the brand name Grof® Breathwork for holotropic breathwork for legal trademark reasons but it is my holotropic breathwork as I want it to be taught.
I, Stan Grof, am not associated with Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT) anymore although my name is still in their business name. Holotropic Breathwork® describes the brand of breathwork practiced and taught by GTT. Owning the trademark Holotropic Breathwork® does not mean owning my work in holotropic breathwork or being the only representative of my work. Holotropic breathwork belongs to the world and we hope it will be taught in my sense for generations to come.
Brigitte and I will not receive any financial profit from our trademark Grof® or from the GROF® Legacy Training unless we are actually teaching in any of the programs.
We are enthusiastically looking forward to supporting holotropic studies and working with many old and new friends (www.grof-legacy-training.com).
We have deep love, admiration and respect for everyone who is finding the courage to undertake these deep inner healing and transformative journeys wherever you choose to participate. For us you are all part of one holotropic community.
Stanislav and Brigitte Grof Germany, April 2021
If I am already certified as a holotropic breathwork facilitator, can I receive Grof® Legacy certification?
For those who have certifications or current breathwork practices and wish to train under Grof® Legacy, we hope to offer abbreviated programs to supplement your existing training and potentially to lead to certification under Grof® Legacy Training.
Can I receive credit in Grof® Legacy certification programs for courses I took in other programs?
Everyone is welcome in any of our programs or events. For those of you who have asked whether there will be interchange between our certification programs and courses taken with other training programs (e.g., Grof Transpersonal Training), we do not anticipate one-for-one credits or the potential of certification based on completion of courses in other programs. We encourage all those enrolled in other programs to continue with their certification tracks and community experience. As Stan has said, "We have deep love, admiration and respect for everyone who is finding the courage to undertake these deep inner healing and transformative journeys wherever you choose to participate. For us you are all part of one holotropic community."
Why is astrology part of your psychology programs?
Trained in the science of medicine, Stan often tells the story of his reluctance to make a place for astrology in his work. The change in his thinking came about through his search for some means of predicting the types of experiences people may have in nonordinary states on particular days.
Ironically, when after years of frustrating effort I finally found a tool that made such predictions possible, it was more controversial than psychedelics themselves. It was astrology, a discipline that, even after years of studying transpersonal phenomena, I myself tended to dismiss as a ridiculous pseudoscience. I came to realize, however, that astrology could be an invaluable tool in the work with both psychedelics and with other forms of non-ordinary (or “holotropic”) states of consciousness such as those induced by powerful experiential techniques of psychotherapy (primal therapy, rebirthing, and holotropic breathwork) or occurring spontaneously during psychospiritual crises. The radical change in my attitude toward astrology has been the result of collaboration with psychologist and philosopher Richard Tarnas, my close friend and colleague. For over three decades, beginning in 1976, we have been jointly exploring the astrological correlates of mystical experiences, psychospiritual crises, psychotic episodes, psychedelic states, and holotropic breathwork sessions. This work has shown that astrology, particularly the study of planetary transits, can predict and illuminate both the archetypal content of non-ordinary states of consciousness and the timing of when particular states are most likely to occur. Our systematic study of the correlations between the nature and content of holotropic states and planetary transits convinced me that a combination of deep experiential therapy with archetypal psychology and transit astrology is the most promising strategy for the future development of psychiatry and depth psychology. (Grof, Stanislav. (2009/2011). Holotropic research and archetypal astrology. Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology, 1, 65-85, p. 66.)
At the risk of simplifying a nuanced subject, Stan and Rick Tarnas made the groundbreaking discovery of correlations between the experience of the particular Basic Perinatal Matrices (BPMS) discovered by Stan as emerging during nonordinary states and the archetypes of the four outer planets, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as known in the form of astrology pioneered by Tarnas, archetypal astrology.
Please learn more on our Archetypal Astrology page (under the Public Programs dropdown heading), through our courses, and with the astrological teachers and consultants allied with our programs.
We consider our inclusion of archetypal astrology in our programs one of our most important strengths -- and consistent with Stan's wish for development of this subject of training and research into the future.
